No worries...

Said with fingers-crossed, Riley is adjusting well to preschool. She has not cried once... unlike her sister... who cried almost every time I dropped her off when she was 3 AND 4 AND even 6...

I was enjoying a high-stakes game of Go, Fish! this morning with this charming preschooler... if you haven't spent time with a 3-year old lately, I highly encourage it.

The stakes were set with these parameters:

You win: I get to pay a horribly overpriced tuition and room/board package to the 4-year University of your choice.

I win: You agree to house me in a clean and well-respected Assisted Living Facility of my choice.

It's only fair... I tell her, her little doe-eyes drinking in all that I'm saying to her with trust and affection. And then she says: "Best 2 out of 3?"

What ARE they teaching them at preschool these days?

Circa 1987...

So - in about 10 days - we've been able to whittle the MIA list down to 130. We're already half-way home. Remarkable...

So thankful for help - Kelly, Karol, Christie, Susan, Dan, Kyle, Peter, Brian, Pat, Jamie, Stephanie & Jeanne... every little bit helps! Even if I'm still a stress-case. Baby steps.

We have our reunion date: July 14, 2007. Canterwood. Excellent!

Listening to I Am Sam soundtrack... Beatles covers... of course a favorite.

Tomorrow will be first attempt leaving Riley at preschool... fingers crossed for painless separation. Update to follow.

The Great American Pastime

A friend gave us 5 tickets to the Mariners game today... we gleefully partook in the Great American Pastime: Eating junk food.

Blech! I hate having a sugar hangover...

The game was fun - the boys rallied a couple of times - but the Rangers still outscored us 4 to 2. Taryn has an interest in baseball, which is cool. She can follow the game, even though she wouldn't want to play the game at this point in her life. Her little friend, Noelle, was entertained with the kettle corn, licorice, peanuts, Skittles, and lemonade... and all the vendors walking the stairs bringing enticing them with their forbidden delicacies like cotton candy and fondue skewers.

Yes, you read correctly. Fondue skewers. Strawberries and banana slices on a stick, covered in chocolate. The concessions are strictly upscale in Seattle.

Thomas, of course, had to get a heart attack special: Chili cheese fries. Ugh! I am very weary of what the evening will bring forth after those chili cheese fries...

Noelle scanned the crowd, did some quick calculations, and proclaimed "There are a trillion people here - or maybe even a billion." Seems about right... Riley wanted to know how many points the black team scored - the black team was the umpires. And Taryn's highlight was the 7th Inning Stretch. She just loves that song. And she was quick to tell Riley not to plan a potty break when Ichiro might be batting - because "he's actually good". How quickly they learn!
I kept myself amused by watching people with copious amounts of junk food scale the stairways in varying conditions of sobriety and motor function. A good time was had by all!

First Day Jitters

Taryn woke up this morning and said "Mommy - it feels like there are butterflies and frogs jumping in my tummy" I could have told her honestly... me, too.

The first day of school for me was always filled with anxiety, anticipation, excitement, and fear. I was trying to minimize those feelings for Taryn. We had the outfit picked out - for 2 weeks - so that was a no-brainer. She got her sassy new haircut last Friday. We've had her backpack and school supplies for nearly a month. We were prepared!

But our best-laid plans went quickly awry when I discovered that I had underestimated the chaos of the school parking lot on the First Day. Add to that the fact that the exact starting time of school was never clearly obtained... they apparently assumed that all of us former Afternoon Kindergarten parents would automatically know that school started promptly at 9:00 AM - and not 9:08 like we had thought. Oops.

Talk about a train wreck. Instead of gleefully skipping to the playground like she had planned, she opened the door and 24 seemingly strange faces were staring at her. She knew a lot of the kids - but at that moment, she wouldn't have recognized her own sister. She did what I would have done (and still long to do at times) she bolted across the schoolyard, screaming "I want to be homeschooled."

What can a mother do at that point? I reasoned with her. I pleaded with her. I tried the COUNTDOWN (you know... "You will comply with my request in 5-4-3-2..." you get the picture) But my best parenting tricks were falling as flat as feathered hair in a Mississippi rainstorm. Suddenly my brain kicked in and I went to the classroom to get her best friend. Emily was able to talk her off the ledge and in they marched - Taryn subtly pushing Em in front as they entered the classroom to minimize the peering eyes. Crisis averted. Phew.

I wasn't expecting the freak out. But it wasn't too bad. And I take total responsibility for arriving late. Tomorrow morning - we're walking - 35 minutes before school starts. It's destined to be a better day.

First things first...

We visited First Grade today! Taryn put her supplies in her desk and got the 411 on the first day... where to put her backpack... how to order milk... etc. I cannot even believe that she's going to be a big First Grader on Tuesday! That seems very old.

Had some great chats with old friends today gathering info for my 20 Year Reunion! This is the fun part, being able to reconnect. 32 people updated... only 198 to go. *sigh*

But I was able to enlist a little moral support - if not exactly a whole crew of eager beaver party planners - moral support is good.

Another recent layout to share, too...

Thank you, Sir, may I have another?

Our team is RED HOT... your team is SO NOT!

I'm in a high school frame of mind today... been contacting alumni for the past 2 days. But still managed to scrap the above **HOT** layout featuring KI Color Theory papers in my dd's fave color GREEN...

Can you say MOJO?

My mojo has returned from it's summer vacation. And let me tell you, I got no postcards, souvenirs, NADA... but I'm just grateful that it returned safely.

If you're not a scrapbooker and you're reading this, you probably think I'm crazy... but all the scrapbookers know what I'm talking about.

Things I'm looking forward to the most right now:

1. School starting
2. School starting
3. School starting

Do you see a pattern here? It's not that we haven't had a great summer... but I just LOVE fall and the feeling of going back to school. Even if it's not ME going to school. This will be a great year - Taryn got the teacher we wanted and her favorite new friend is in her class - so things are looking VERY good so far.

Other upcoming things I'm looking forward to:

- Reunion planning... LOVE hearing from my long lost friends from high school!
- Gilmore Girls Season premiere
- Creating Keepsakes Convention in Bellevue in November... working with KB at the Dollar Scrapbooking booth will be an amazing good time!

The Air Up There...

From our recent adventures in Central Oregon... the girls loved exploring the summit at Mt. Bachelor, especially the ride on the chair lift (I, however, was white-knuckled on the descent). Our trip was filled with new experiences for them - river "rafting" (well, okay it was technically a CREEK - and there was mostly floating happening) - the chair lift ride - hiking at the top of a mountain - playing in the snow in summertime - golfing on real turf - swimming every day - and Riley learning how to swim *underwater* (with her face fully submerged).

Reunions...

I have 11 months until my 20 Year High School reunion. Or possibly 12... I haven't set the date yet. My mind is reeling with the possibility that I will be in charge of this event. Gotta check with Kristen and see what her availability is like first... maybe she would like to plan it??? Fingers crossed.

Reunions are excellent ways to get re-connected, make new connections, and to force you to work out harder than you have in a few years. I'll have to cut out a carrot from Taryn's orange construction paper and write REUNION on it with my black Sharpie and post it in front of the treadmill.

At least you're not required to wear a cap and gown to your reunion... is this a flattering look for anyone? Donna Karan - HELP!!

But it is good to think about those high school days. Old friends. Lots of laughter. Swim team. Late night phone calls. My dream car was a Spree scooter. Eating Oreo's one layer at a time. Stuff that you can only do when you're a teenager...

Independence Day!

We had an awesome 4th of July celebration... kicked off by some HUGE fireworks at Emerald Downs Racetrack - which were able to view from the comfort of my Grandma's deck - score!

On Independence Day proper, we spent a leisurely morning around the homestead... girls played with the neighbors... Thomas finished working on his sermon for his guest appearance tonight... and then headed to the Allan's for a barbecue with all of our favorite people!

The girls ran wild and only popped up when it was time for food or drink... love those kind of low-maintenance parties! Tori made her famous *Baked Beans with Cheese* - if you LOVE baked beans, you'll have to try her recipe!

We scooted home to catch the pyromaniacs in our own neighborhood... there were 3 different sets of so-huge-you'd-think-they-could-never-be-legal fireworks competing for best in show. I have to admit that my general attitude with on-street fireworks is "Bah, Boom"... they scare the bezeebers out of me. I stand close by, hose in hand ready to extinguish the inevitable fire in my hydrangeas. We escaped another Fourth unsinged... thank goodness!

The girls loved playing with fire and things that went *POP!* and *SIZZLE*... and I didn't have to turn the hose on them. The fun and games ended when Riley, with her sweatshirt covering her face, decided to take on the water bucket and ended up covered in muddy slightly sulfuric water and damp firework guts. But the neighbors got a nice chuckle out of it... poor girl, she's still little enough to provide entertainment at her own expense. *sigh*

Tori's Famous Baked Beans With Cheese
1 can pork and beans
1 can lima beans, drained
1 can kidney beans, drained
4 slices bacon
1 medium onion, chopped
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/3 c. ketchup
2 tbsp Worchestershire sauce
1/4 lb cheddar cheese, cubed
Parmesan cheese (grated)

Cook bacon until very crisp; saute onion with bacon. Drain fat from bacon and onion mixture. Crumble bacon into small pieces. Mix all ingredients (except Parmesan). Pour into casserole dish; sprinkle Parmesan cheese over top. Cook for 3 hours at 300.

For smaller family: use above proportions and cook in a smaller baking dish so beans will stay moist.

For party size: double or triple recipe above and use 9x13 baking dish. You may want to make extra sauce (ketchup, brown sugar, and Worchestershire sauce) to add halfway through baking if beans look a little dry.

The cheddar cheese cubes are what make this dish unbelievably good and will always suprise people at first... one guy asked yesterday if there were *peaches* in the beans! LOL!!

Philosophy 101

Have you ever noticed that much of life's enjoyment consists in how you interpret the trivial events and details of your day?

For example: I took the girls to a Strawberry Farm this morning to pick berries. I had to use the coughcough*facilities*coughcough during our visit. I must say that the technology of HoneyBuckets (porta-potties - or outhouses depending on where you live) has vastly improved. Upon entering said HoneyBucket, I steeled myself for the aroma that would certainly greet me upon first inhaled breath... but no need. It smelled faintly of Wild Raspberry Rain - or some other Glade scent. It was downright pleasant. Well, I'm choosing to view it as pleasant. (refer to opening statement)

Another example: I received an e-mail notifying me that I won $100 as a Runner-Up in the Creative Imaginations contest. Now - I could easily choose to be an ungrateful wench about the $10,000 Grand Prize that I didn't win. But, I'm a civilized person. I don't need to throw a tantrum. I will gratefully clutch my $100 prize and spend it gleefully.

Also - we have an 8-foot pool in our backyard. The girls are enjoying it immensely. Almost as much as they would enjoy a full-sized pool. It really doesn't take much to create a lot of joy for kids. That, my friends, is something to learn from. A huge life lesson to gird your loins - or something like that.

No topical photos to post... just a couple from our photoshoot at Emages yesterday!

Random Thoughts...

1. I am FAMOUS. Well, not really. But there is a really cute new Design Team page at Scraptalk.

2. Karen Burniston told me that you can emboss things printed on your Inkjet printer. Which, of course, I filed in the back of my mind as one of the techniques I would probably not need to use, but feel really cool knowing about.

Then - tonight - I printed on a transparency - without using the transparency setting - and as the ink is rubbing off on my fingers - I remember Karen's suggestion. Brilliant! Of course - you have to be super careful about MELTING the transparency in the heating process. Yeah, uh, well... chalk that up to lessons NOT learned during Chemistry class.

3. I love the line in Grease where Rizzo tells Marti that "I feel like a defective typewriter. I skipped a period."

and no, I'm not pregnant. Just popped into my head for some reason tonight.

4. My 3-year old was crying today because American Idol is all over. I don't have any words of wisdom related to this - it's just weird.

5. My all time favorite song TODAY is by The Fray... perhaps you've heard it? It was the Number 1 download at iTunes for 8 weeks or something. "Over My Head"

Seacrest - Out.

Phew! That was a long race!

Today is the final day to post a layout for the Creative Imaginations Studio Basics 101 contest!

And I thought I was being so cool last night - by finishing a double page spread. But the official rules say it can be no larger than 12" in any direction - so I did not post my spread in fear of having that final LO disqualified.

Some rebel I turned out to be. HA!

But when the prize is $10,000 worth of Cropper Hopper, Sakura, Bazzill, and Creative Imaginations products... it is best to mind your P's and Q's.

She DID it!

I am still brimming with pride... nay, it's fair to say that I'm giddy... after seeing the way-way-off-Broadway production of BUGZ! starring none other than my own dear Taryn.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, katydids and katydads... in a landmark performance as Monarch Butterfly #5... our own redheaded sweetheart.

Considering that this is actually the FIRST time she has been able to be up in front of people without freaking out, bolting, crying, hiding, etc. She picked a good time to come out of the chrysalis! Speaking parts... 5 production number songs... she fluttered thru the program effortlessly.

If I didn't know any better, I would wonder who this imposter is. But I have compared dental records - and she is, indeed, still Taryn. We did have some dress-rehearsal jitters accompanied by a tantrum on Tuesday morning. But today - Nada. Zip. Zilcho. Yippee!!

I'm not ready to sign with an agent yet, mind you... she's not diving into Drama Camp anytime in the near future. But, she did enjoy the experience. And because of her participation, she's not flunking out of Kindergarten as I had feared at the beginning of the year. (hee hee)

The Stink Bugs of course, got to steal the show... and I would swear that the Army Ants had WAY more lines... but we'll just overlook those little issues. Maybe I'm fortunate that I won't really have to be a showbiz Mom and sabotage the other kids' costumes with superglue and itching powder.

I will just leave you with a few choice morsels of the play... some lyrics from "Be A Lady" (LadyBUG)

If someone treats you rough
And life is kinda tough
You think you've had enough
But, be a lady!

If someone isn't kind
And friends are hard to find
You just say nevermind
And be a lady!

Be a lady
Whoa-o-o
Be a lady
Whoa-o-o
Be a lady - That's what I am!

If someone isn't nice
Their heart's as cold as ice
Well, just take my advice
And be a lady!

If someone hurts your pride
You'd like to run and hide
You just keep dignified
And be a lady!

Be a lady... whoa-o-o
Be a lady... whoa-o-o
Be a lady! That's what I am!

When all you see are dots
Complexion's full of spots
Remember all you've got
And be a lady!

When all your friends have fled
And all you see is red
Just keep a level head
And be a lady!

Be a lady... whoa-o-o
Be a lady... whoa-o-o
Be a lady! That's what I am!

Not a lot of words today... just this:

Saturday, May 06, 2006

You may be right, I may be CRAZY

but I just might be the lunatic you're looking for...

turn out the lights, don't try to save me,

You may be wrong, but for all I know,

You may be right.

The first time I remember hearing that song was on "The Chipmunks" album of rock-n-roll covers. How sad is that?

I really love Billy Joel. But that is not what this post is about.

I received an e-mail in my in-box... one of a THOUSAND scrapbooking related e-mails that come my way each week.

PFD IDOL... which stands for Picket Fence Designs - you naughty anagram creators, you should be ashamed of yourselves for what you were starting to think of!

There's a Scrapbooking Idol contest at Picket Fence Designs... and what do I do? Sign up!!

Am I insane? Do I really need the rejection and humiliation? Of course, I just might hang in there for a couple of rounds... so who knows?

I am one big fat glutton for punishment, that's what I am. So if you would like to help me out - you can go and vote for me. The first assignment is posted today - and is due in 10 days. I can't do the math at the moment - but it might be May 16th. ("Math is hard" - High School Dropout Barbie)

Thomas is gone this weekend... we've had some minor excitement around here. My little 2-year old friend across the street got a pebble stuck up his nose. His mother was gone, so his father decided I should try and remove it. Small children can sure be noisy and strong when given the proper motivation!

I will say that as a result of the tears and utter terror, the pebble worked its way down the nostril and was removed without a trip to the ER. I told the father that he should check into getting the correct surgical tool for this extraction - its bound to happen again. Heh!

Belly laughs

are so so so good for you! And they often happen for me while I watch Gilmore Girls. The BEST written show on the planet. Of all time. Well, perhaps *Cheers* had some merit way back when... and M*A*S*H, which you have to admire just for the asterisks.

But seriously... the writers of Gilmore Girls, primarily Amy Sherman Paladino... well they ROCK!

Lorelai: "Michel (the French guy) how long will you be doing that?" (he's bouncing up and down)
Michel:"I just found out the organic dairy down the street has been mixing up the lid colors - I've been drinking 2 percent milk for the last two weeks instead of nonfat. I've consumed an extra billion calories."
Lorelai:"I'm glad that extra fat consumption hasn't interfered with your ability to do math"

Lorelai's father:"Have you been to South Dakota? The most boring state in America? I swear when I flew in, one of the faces of Mt. Rushmore yawned."

Lorelai's mother:"Will you at least promise to keep your comedy set at my funeral under 5 minutes?"

Lorelai's father:"This hotel, the finest in South Dakota supposedly... it smells like feet."

Lorelai:"What kind of errands is it? Shopping, banking, hardware store? Is it dealing in human trafficking, because I'm a very good people person"

Lorelai:"That's not a car, it's a rap video set"

Lorelai's mother:"I'm not paying extra for bullet-proof windows, I haven't been straifed in years"

Lorelai:"The sun can't find you under that hat. If Frosty the Snowman had that hat, he'd be living in Miami right now"

Now - some of those you have to hear in context... but seriously, this series is divinely funny. We're at the end of Season 6... 6 sublimely entertaining seasons. All conveniently available on DVD. And no, I don't get any kind of kick-back... I just want other people to be able to sit around with me and say "Remember that time when Lorelai and Rory..."

If this is drama now... LOOK OUT!

I got a glimpse today of my future. And it wasn't pretty. Being the mother of 2 girls seemed like an easy lot in life. I chuckle behind my friends' backs when they report of the mischief caused by their male progeny... trips to the ER, mystery fungal growth beneath their beds, and all manner of bodily noises displayed like a recital.

But now I know who will have the last laugh.

As those boys slowly mature into laid-back, easy-going young men... my girls will be coming into their own birthright as the next generation of Drama Queens. At the slightest provocation Dr. Jekyll becomes Mr. Hyde and the whole family is sent into uproar.

They are only 3 and 5. THEY ARE ONLY 3 AND 5!

Riley had a complete meltdown on the way to school because it got too late to walk to school. Taryn was out-of-sorts as well and stomped away from me without saying goodbye. *sigh* I shudder to think what 13 and 15 will be like. I can only hope that they will be making a stronger form of Prozac by then and it will be available in an auto-injection belt like insulin for diabetics.

Even now, as the older is at school (sorry, Ms. Borgmann) the younger is flailing Barbies around in frustration because the tiny clothes won't slide on correctly and the tiny matching shoe is missing for Princess Annelise. Please, oh please, can't we just have a few Matchbox cars and a homemade cardboard ramp and call it good?

I love my girls. I really do. And I know that parenting isn't for the faint of heart. I just wish that my energy level would keep up with the ever-changing demands. Food for thought. Better living thru chemistry. Stop the world, I want to get off. And now I'm just babbling....

Gonna suck it up and help with those @#%$ Barbie clothes. Ciao!
